FUND-RAISING

One of the aims of the Association is to support King George V College by attending events and by raising funds for a variety of purposes.

One of the principal ways is through the College Foundation, which holds funds derived from the sale of Long Rigg outdoor pursuits centre. The Mason Scholarship, endowed by the School's first deputy head, George Mason, is used to support student activities in the academic, community and recreational fields.

The Joseph Edwards Memorial Fund provides help for needy students to complete their courses.

In addition, Old Georgians offer sums annually to a number of College departments for the purchase of useful items of equipment. The most significant contribution in recent years was a donation of £6,000 for furniture in the reception area of KGV's new Millennium Centre, opened in 1997.

SOCIAL EVENTS

Over the years there has been a wide range of social and sporting events organised by the Old Georgians. In years past, the Annual Rugby and Cricket matches against the Old Boys were firm fixtures in the calendar. The longest standing event since these has been the annual Chairman’s Weekend when a group of willing members spend a pleasant two days walking and imbibing in the countryside at a location chosen by the chairman of the day. Recent excursions include Appleby-in-Westmorland, Bamford in Derbyshire, Bowland Bridge near Windermere, Ingleborough, Hawkshead, Slaidburn and Sedbergh. During the 90s, a summer barbecue was a regular event. In 1993, a Snooker Tournament was introduced which evolved into a games evening including darts and carpet bowls, accompanied by a hotpot supper.

In 2008, an annual quiz night was introduced which has gone from strength to strength, regularly attracting 100 participants. In 2014, a golf tournament was added as a pre-event to the Annual Dinner.
The most noteworthy social event in the Association's calendar is the afore mentioned Annual Dinner. Usually held on Maundy Thursday, the event has changed location throughout the years, taking in the Prince of Wales Hotel, the Bold Hotel, Southport & Birkdale Cricket Club and Formby Hall Hotel.,The organiser for over forty years was Stan Rimmer, to whom OGs owe a debt of gratitude for his consistent work and dedication. Stan handed over the organising duties for 2009 onwards to Jonathan Elliott, earning a well-earned rest and bottle of red each year!. It is encouraging to note that regular attendance is gradually increasing, with 132 dining at the 2008 event, although we peaked with 200 people attended the 75th Anniversary Dinner in 2001.

After several successful years, the Committee decided to bring the event back into Southport Town Centre, holding the dinner at the Bold Hotel and the Prince of Wales Hotel. In 2016, the dinner moved once again, to the Ramada Hotel on the Promenade.

In 2018, 2019 and 2022 the dinner was held at the Hesketh Golf Club.

The delayed 2020 Centenary Dinner was held in the Bliss Hotel in October 2021.

The dinner in 2023 will be held on Thursday 6th April. The venue will be the Hesketh Golf Club.
